Culture of Innovation in NYC Government Series

In the first event of a series focusing on recognizing and building a "Culture of Innovation" in NYC government;  The NYC Innovation & Emerging Technologies Workgroup hosted an audience of roughly 80 attendees (in person and on web) at the NYC Department of Transportation.

The first event highlighted the award winning New York City Census FactFinder (CFF)... which was initially developed to meet demand for customizable geographic census data. For the recent CFF update, the Department of City Planning (DCP) Population Division, in collaboration with DoITT, innovatively developed an interactive mapping application that associates the American Community Survey (ACS) data to its respective geographies and provides query, selection, and visualization capabilities. Some members responsible for this successful and unique application were on hand to share their experience and to provide insight on their efforts. The presenters included:

  • Joel Alvarez, Senior Demographic Analyst, Population Division, NYC Department of City Planning
  • Michel Miller, Interim IT Division Director, NYC Department of City Planning
  • Colin Reilly, Senior Director, Geographic Information Systems, New York City Department of Information Technology & Telecommunications

Following the presentations, there was an active and dynamic Q&A/Open Discussion session where the audience joined in to discuss issues, experiences, and thoughts on the topic of discussion. The event was extremely constructive and turned into an invigorating and captivating exchange of information and ideas providing much food for thought and plans for action.
