Cloud Computing Security:
What you need to consider when moving to the cloud

The NYS Forum Information Security, IT Procurement and Business Innovation Workgroups joined forces to present, Cloud Computing Security: What you need to consider when moving to the cloud?

This dynamic presentation was led by an impressive panel of experts: Ian Morrison, Cloud Solution Strategist, Microsoft; Gary Alterson,Senior Manager, Risk and Advisory Services, Cisco; Mike Rosa, Government Compliance Architect, Salesforce; and Bhavesh Chauhan, Principal-Solutions Engineering, Verizon Enterprise Solutions.

The Wednesday morning seminar was kicked off by Sanjay Goel, Director of Research at the New York State Center for Information Forensics and Assurance at the University who gave a fantastic introduction outlining an overview of Cloud Computing practices and providing a deep landscape about the elements of choosing a cloud provider.

The first to present was Ian Morrison, Cloud Solution Strategist, Microsoft who covered "Considerations for Choosing a Trusted Cloud Provider". Mr. Morrison provided thorough details on how to choose the correct Cloud Provider and the type of things to look for when considering options. He spoke about the importance of fully understanding how a cloud provider operates and secures their datacenters and services and what a provider/vendor should be offering when it comes to security and protection.

Next to present was Gary Alterson, Senior Manager, Risk and Advisory Services, Cisco. Gary covered the topic of "Securing Your Hybrid Cloud". The presentation gave a comprehensive breakdown of the following topics: Hybrid Cloud Model Overview, Adoption Factors for State Agencies, Cloud Security Framework and Hybrid Considerations, and Management Models for Hybrid Cloud. He, just as Ian Morrison did, stressed the importance of understanding the intent on how you will use the cloud and understanding the different options when choosing a provider.

Mike Rosa, Government Compliance Architect, Salesforce followed speaking about the importance of trust with providers. Mr. Rosa spoke about the elements of trust with having high security, high reliability, and high performance as well as discussing a number of benefits with Multi-Tenacy platforms.

The events final presenter was Bhavesh Chauhan, Principal-Solutions Engineering, Verizon Enterprise Solutions. Mr. Chauhan did a fantastic job of reiterating the points that were made by all of the previous presenters and tying them into each other. A topic also covered was "Implementing Data-Centric Security in the Cloud" and provided a wealth of statistics and information to the forum.

The event concluded with an active and dynamic Q & A session where the entire panel of presenters joined in to field questions and provide answers from the audience.
